China floods leave dozens dead
The rains have sparked fears of an extra strain on weak river banks [Reuters]
At least 50 people have been killed after days of torrential rains triggered flooding and landslides in central and southern China and officials fear the situation will worsen as a major dam threatenes to burst.
The Wenquan reservoir in northwestern Qinghai province was on Sunday holding three times more water than its safe capacity, state-run Xinhua news agencysaid.
If it bursts, 200,000 people in the city of Golmud, about 130km away, could be flooded, along with power plants and a high-altitude railway,
More than 9,000 people in immediate danger from the dam have already been evacuated.
